Last Sunday, Phase III study on a new drug codenamed T-DMI was presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology by Genentech. The study, involving 991 women in advanced stage of HER2-positive breast cancer, has shown that the drug delayed the progression of the cancer and had fewer side effects than the conventional chemotherapy. As the results of the study are encouraging, Genentech may submit T-DM1 for FDA approval later this year. The new approach may lead to discovering new -precision- drugs for treating other types of cancers too. Man-made antibodies are already in use for treating cancer. Attaching chemotherapy agents to these anti-bodies may bring in a wholly new way of treating cancer.
